The Coelacanth is a modern lobe-finned Fish that is related to Lungfish and Tetrapods. It is a very distant cousin to Hyneria featured in the first episode of WWM. Coelacanth was thought to have gone extinct in the K/T Extinction until a living specimen was caught in South Africa in 1938, making the Coelacanth a living fossil. It only appeared in the companion books of Walking with Dinosaurs and Sea Monsters.
Facts[]
The coelacanths (i/ˈsiːləkænθ/ SEE-lə-kanth) constitute a rare order of fish that includes two extant species in the genus Latimeria: the West Indian Ocean coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis). They follow the oldest known living lineage of Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fish and tetrapods), which means they are more closely related to lungfish, reptiles and mammals than to the common ray-finned fishes. They are found along the coastlines of the Indian Ocean and Indonesia.
Walking with... series[]
The coelacanth only appears in the books, mentioned as a primitive fish and a close relative of tetrapods.
