Didelphodon was a small marsupial from the Late Cretaceous Period. This primitive, badger-sized mammal had to live in the world that was dominated by the dinosaurs.

Facts

It was about a meter in length and like most mammals of the Mesozoic it was an omnivore. Among other things, this meant that when food was scarce (as it was before the K/T mass extinction), all mammals had to do is scavenge meals from the dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus and Dromaeosaurus.

Eventually Didelphodon helped pave the way for the Cenozoic mammals to eventually conquer the world. Unfortunately, Didelphodon itself became extinct 6 million years after the non-avian dinosaurs.

Errors

  • Didelphodon was made to look like a cross between a Tasmanian devil, a small bear, and a badger. Newer studies indicate that they had a more otter-like appearance.
  • While the episode utilised it to showcase how Mesozoic mammals were small and living in the shadows of the dinosaurs, the real animal ironically showcased how diverse Cretaceous mammals were, being a specialised aquatic mammal.
