Giant Weta are a group of insect species that live in New Zealand. Looking distantly like the more common grasshoppers and crickets, they belong to their own family, and are living fossils. In the fifth episode of Walking with Dinosaurs, a Tuatara is seen successfully ambush and eat a weta (in live footage, as the tuatara is another living fossil from the Mesozoic Era that still exists today), and another weta is shown frozen in a New Zealand winter and thaw in spring, also shot live. Although there are several species of giant weta, WWD hadn't identified which species it had aired, precisely.
