Metoposaurus was a large amphibian that filled a niche similar to modern crocodiles in the Late Triassic.
Creature attributes[]
Physical appearance and biology[]
Metoposaurus resembled a large, slab-headed salamander in life. In Walking with Dinosaurs: A Natural History their skin is green while the depictions in the Walking with Dinosaurs fact files and Walking With Dinosaurs: The Official Sticker Album it has purple skin with a red underbelly, a coloration similar to modern poison dart frogs.
Behaviour and traits[]
Metoposaurus was the dominant predator of the Triassic waterways, but their dominance decreased with the appearance of the phytosaurs.[1]
In Walking with Dinosaurs: A Natural History[]
New Blood[]
Several Metoposaurus are seen clustered together in the shallow water of a river in the section "The Heat Returns".
Behind the scenes[]
In Walking with Dinosaurs: A Natural History Metoposaurus was simply identified as "metoposaur" only being identified as proper in the glossary of the companion websites.
The Metoposaurus species that lived in North America has since been reclassified as its own separate genus called Koskinonodon bakeri.
