Platecarpus is a genus of mosasaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now North America and Europe.
Facts[]
Platecarpus was a small mosasaur, measuring between 13.1 feet to 18.6 feet (4 m to 5.67 m). It was previously represented by 9 species[1], but some of these species have since been reassigned to different genera or species. These species are:
- Platecarpus anguliferus
- Platecarpus brachycephalus
- Platecarpus coryphaeus (synonymized with P. tympaniticus)
- Platecarpus ictericus (synonymized with P. tympaniticus)
- Platecarpus latispinus
- Platecarpus planifrons (reassigned to Plesioplatecarpus)
- Platecarpus ptychodus
- Platecarpus tectulus
- Platecarpus tympaniticus
Behind the scenes[]
The depiction of Platecarpus in Walking With Dinosaurs: The Official Sticker Album is now considered inaccurate as a fossil specimen revealed that Platecarpus, as well as all mosasaurs, had a tail fluke rather than the eel-like body plan that they were thought to have had. Also, in 2014 it was revealed that mosasaurs had a color pattern like leatherback turtles.
