The Orphan is the first episode of the 2025 Walking with Dinosaurs series, following the story of a young Triceratops nicknamed Clover and what most of her short life may have been like.
Synopsis[]
66 mya, in Late Cretaceous Montana, a lone baby Triceratops named Clover wanders across a river in a forest. Following a dragonfly, she comes across a nest of eggs and begins playing with one, until the nest's owner, an Infernodrakon, descends and menaces her until she retrieves the egg and puts it back in her nest. As Clover takes her leave, a Tyrannosaurus then appears and attacks the Infernodrakon, killing her as Clover watches. Seeking protection, Clover later comes upon an older bull Triceratops; she wakes him up, but he is not interested in her. That night, as it rains, the Tyrannosaurus finds Clover as she feeds and chases her. She takes shelter in an alcove that thankfully is too small for her pursuer to fully get through. The next morning, Clover leaves her shelter to seek protection again after she hears calls from nearby. She comes upon a herd of Edmontosaurus which tolerate her presence, and she befriends a juvenile member of the herd. That evening, however, the Tyrannosaurus appears again and Clover alerts them to its presence. The Edmontosaurus mount a defence, but they panic and start to flee along with Clover. The juvenile Edmontosaurus she befriended ends up being caught and killed by the predator while the herd leaves Clover behind, leaving her alone again. Later that night, the Tyrannosaurus finds and chases Clover again, but this time they come upon the old bull Triceratops from earlier and he stands his ground against the predator, flushing his frill with blood for display, and failing that, charging the Tyrannosaurus and injuring its right leg with one of his horns. The Tyrannosaurus in turn injures him by biting into his frill, leaving both in a stalemate. Now focused on Clover, the Tyrannosaurus tries to attack her, but with this distraction, the bull Triceratops fatally gores the predator's underside with his horns, killing it. The bull, still not interested in the baby whose life he saved, takes his leave, but that doesn't stop Clover from following him as a new day dawns.
