Walking With Wikis

Note: This page is still under construction.

Article categories are an important component of wiki articles. They serve to help readers navigate through different types of articles and find other similar articles that could be of interest to them. However, on many wikis, articles are often cluttered with categories that don't serve their intended purpose, and are just there as nothing more than large conglomerations of text. Therefore, to reduce the amount of repetitive and unnecessary categories cluttering articles, only a handful of category types are permitted on this wiki. These categories will be specified below, based on article type. If you believe a category type should be included, contact Antiliun to discuss the matter.

General

The following categories can be applied on every article on the Walking With Wikis:

  • Walking With Wikis
  • Featured Articles
    • This should only be added to articles that are/have previously been featured on the wiki's main page.
    • For more information about featured articles, refer to the Featured articles page.

For articles under 500 bytes (refer to Special:ShortPages for a comprehensive list), the following category should be added to it:

  • Article stubs
    • Make sure to add the stub template, too (instructions can be found under the Article Presentation section in the Manual of Style).

Creatures

The following categories can be applied to every creature article:

  • Creatures
  • Creatures in [Series name or Episode name]
  • Creatures from [Continent name]
  • Creatures from the [Time period name]
  • Creature from the [Era name]
  • [Animal's diet type]
    • e.g., Carnivores, Herbivores, Omnivores, etc.
  • Categories relating to a creature's taxonomy.
    • Vertebrate or Invertebrate
    • [Creature's taxonomic class]
      • e.g. Reptiles, Mammals, etc.
      • For the purpose of this wiki, dinosaurs articles should not be put in the Reptiles category. Although this is taxonomically incorrect, this is so navigation would be more user-friendly for readers since a reader clicking on the Dinosaurs category is likely to be looking for articles on dinosaurs instead of articles on the multitude of other extinct reptiles featured in the Walking With... series.
    • [Creature's clade name]
      • e.g., Dinosaurs, Marsupials, etc.
    • [Creature's sub-clade name]
      • e.g., Theropods, Arthropods, Ungulates, etc.
    • [Creature's family name]
      • e.g., Tyrannosaurs, Glyptodonts, Proboscideans, etc.
      • Don't get too specific on this one. We don't need a creature's full phylogenetic classification here on the wiki.
      • For the purpose of this wiki, bird articles should not be put in the Dinosaurs category. Although this is taxonomically incorrect, this is so navigation would be more user-friendly for readers since a reader clicking on the Birds category is likely to be looking for articles on actual birds instead of articles on non-avian dinosaurs.
  • Categories relating to a creature's lifestyle
    • e.g., Terrestrial, aquatic, or aerial

  • Deceased - unnecessary on creature articles; pretty much most of the creatures in the Walking With... series are dead.

  • Animals discovered in [year] – unnecessary; can be stated in the article.
  • Prehistoric Creatures described in [year] – unnecessary; can be stated in the article.
  • Animals from [continent/country/state name] – redundant/repetitive; Creatures from [continent name] categories already serve a similar purpose. Also can be stated in the article.
  • Animals that have been killed – unnecessary; too niche/specialized. Also serves no real purpose.
  • [Creature name] Victims – unnecessary; too niche/specialized. Also serves no real purpose.
  • [Era/Time period name] Animals – redundant/repetitive; Creatures from the [era/time period name] already serves a similar purpose.
  • [Episode/series name] Animals – redundant/repetitive; Creatures in [episode/series name] already serves a similar purpose.
  • [Animal group name] Animals – redundant/repetitive; categories that are just the animal group's name already serve a similar purpose.
  • Animals – redundant/repetitive; Creatures category already serves a similar purpose.
  • Killers – unnecessary; animals kill out of necessity, not for the sake of being violent.
  • Series that aired in [year] – unnecessary; too niche/specialized. Also serves no real purpose since the information is already provided.
  • Stories – redundant/repetitive; Episodes category already serves a similar purpose.
  • [Series name] Episode [episode number] animals – redundant; Creatures from [Series name] or Creatures [episode name] categories already serve a similar purpose.

  • [Series name] Episodes – redundant/repetitive; Episodes category already serves a similar role.
