Announcement[]

“A whole new generation of viewers is about to fall in love with Walking With Dinosaurs. The original series was one of the most exciting factual shows of all time, and this reinvention builds on that amazing legacy. Each episode is underpinned by the very latest science but is also filled with drama - making this a series for both dino lovers and people who just want to be told a great story."

– Jack Bootle, BBC Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual

On June 4, 2024, BBC announced the return of the beloved series in a new, six-part reimagining of the series, set to air on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, and PBS in 2025. Viewers will get to meet a variety of dinosaur species from various points in the Mesozoic, from the river-dwelling Spinosaurus and the titanic Lusotitan to the majestic Triceratops and the mighty T. rex.

On January 22, 2025, three first-look images of Pachyrhinosaurus and Albertosaurus were released.

On March 28, 2025, the cover for the companion book would be revealed, showing the first-look of Spinosaurus.

On April 10, 2025, the first official trailer was released by BBC, and the narrator was revealed to be Bertie Carvel. Another trailer was released by the PBS. BBC confirmed that the series will be released in May 2025 in the UK through BBC iPlayer, while PBS confirmed that the series will air on June 16, 2025 in the US.

All episodes are released on May 25th on BBC iPlayer, with the first episode broadcasted by BBC One on the same day.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third installment in the franchise since the 2013 movie and Walking with Cavemen to not be associated with Tim Haines.
    • This will also be the only series in the franchise to not air on The Discovery Channel.
  • While the series features many new species never before seen in the franchise's history, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Utahraptor, and Edmontosaurus all return from the original series.
    • Out of the four returning species from the original series, this will be the first time a living Triceratops will be featured on the small screen in the franchise's history.
  • Except for Spinosaurus, all the theropods are depicted with lips.
  • Unlike the original series, which featured every single time period in the Mesozoic era, the 2025 series only features the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
    • Out of the six episodes, only one takes place during the Jurassic period.
  • Each episode in the 2025 series is about 50 minutes long whereas in the original series, each episode was about 30 minutes.
  • Unlike the original series, which mainly presented itself as a traditional nature documentary, this series shows scenes in the present day with paleontologists trying to piece together the story presented within each episode, a choice that would be criticized by the fans.
  • The Utahraptor from the 2025 series is based on the unnamed indeterminate species discovered from the Poison Strip Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation, where Gastonia lorriemcwhinneyae and Planicoxa are also discovered.[1][2]
  • The inclusion of Cryodrakon in episode 4 is based on the indeterminate azhdarchid specimen found in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation. The BBC decided to use this genus name instead of referring it to as just an azhdarchid pterosaur, since Cryodrakon is the only known named azhdarchid in Alberta, Canada.[3] The unnamed azhdarchid pterosaur in episode 5 which uses the same model as Cryodrakon is based on the azhdarchid pterosaur trackway found in the Wapiti Formation.[4]
